I had to do it.
For years, of course, I always loved cars but
lacked money and space for projects (especially when kids were small). My wife has always indulged me, which is how I put 180,000 miles on an RX-8 in 6 years as my daily driver.
Before cars, my idle hands got busy with ponds. I renovated one in our first house, and I built the one you see. Ok, I adapted it from the existing redwood planter box you see above. I used to maintain it beautifully as a hobby, and in the warm months it was lot of work. But it was cool.
Since my ability to acquire projects has increased, the pond has been neglected. I was going to tackle it once the weather got warm, but the heart attack in May messed up that plan.
That fence is about 7 feet tall. A nursery client gave me that thing from a creek on his property, and it overgrew everything. So I had at that bastard today. The fish need space to swim.
It still needs lots of work, and in car terms, the work I did today reveals that full interior restoration is needed. Body is solid, and it runs great. But the inside is a lost cause.
I am determined to revisit this hobby.

Ponds are great. I built and maintained two as a kid in the houses I grew up in. The first one was my Mom’s idea, but I was the 10 year old labor that dug it, and then I got really into running it. When we moved at 14, I spearedheaded the pond project at the new house almost as soon as we moved in.
I’ve been thinking about where I’d like to put one in my house (maybe next spring), but I’ve got to get busy bringing the inside of the house out of 1990 first.

Ooh, fishes. Are those Koi?
Here’s a fun fact about Koi- recently, scientists who study fish have found that Koi in captivity are most happy in a group of four. This behavior is also observed in the wild. A heirarchy among the four fish forms in almost all cases- the biggest and fastest becomes dominant over the other three, eating first and dictating where the school swims. This fish is referred to as “Koi A” or “A Koi.” The next two fish are labelled B and C, and generally do whatever Koi A does. The fourth fish, D, also generally follows its leaders. Usually, it’s a little smaller than the others and a slower swimmer- in fact, if not for the other three fish, D would starve . A, B, and C will bring the smaller, slower fish food.
This may seem like it would not be beneficial to the group. However, when a large predator attacks the group, the purpose of the smallest Koi becomes clear. The largest three fish flee from the predator, and the last one, being unable to outswim the enemy, swims away from the others . Koi A, B, and C are able to survive because the predator is being distracted by the D Koi.

That’s all well and good, but the real question is; have you been handed any swords by strange women?
